Training with Hitchin Netball Club

Young netball player in action, raising hand with intense concentration during a game

Coaching sessions for the Hitchin Netball Club are held on Tuesday evenings during term time at The Priory School in Hitchin.

Minis Training

Our Minis training is designed for our youngest members, from Year 3 to Year 6. These sessions introduce the basics of netball in a fun and engaging way.

Juniors Training

Juniors training caters to players in Year 7 to Year 9. Typically, players train within their own year group, although exceptionally talented players may be moved up to train with an older group.

Youth Squad Training

Our Youth squad training is for players from Year 10 to Year 13, focusing on developing advanced skills and team play.

The purpose of netball coaching is to learn skills, rules of the game and an opportunity to practice this in a non-competitive environment. Every session will include some specific drills that improve the player's skills.  These include: passing, shooting, stable body positioning, catching, footwork, dodging, pivoting and forward movement. Performing these drills with intensity will naturally improve aerobic fitness.

A netball match lasts for 40-60 minutes (depending on the league), broken down into four quarters with a few brief rest breaks in between. To make it through each quarter and the entire game, a netball player needs a high level of aerobic fitness. Interval training, speed training, circuit training and drills improves both cardiovascular fitness and game-specific skills and are also included in training.

We recognise to improve netball skills and knowledge; competitive play is important. We provide all players, in all year groups with the opportunity to play in tournaments and leagues outside training times. Our netball club is well known within the local netball community, and we arrange ‘friendly’ games at training. This enables players who are unable to commit to league games, the opportunity to play competitively.

We are proud of our Club being an all-inclusive ability club, but we are also able to develop talented players to a higher playing level. We currently have players who train within our Club and train with Hertfordshire County Netball, Mavericks Superleague Futures Programme and a local development squad.

We are very proud of our training program. Our coaches and volunteers make a real effort to turn out and put on great sessions for over 160 young players. The most important aspect of our programme is that everyone has fun!
